A view of Kono Terrace and the Old Tone River

One Hundred Famous Views of Edo No.95A view of Kono Terrace and the Old Tone River

At the edge of Konodai Terrace was a cliff rising steeply from the Old Tone River, which flowed from north to south through the easternmost part of Edo city into Edo Bay.
The foot of the cliff was skirted by the Old Tone River, which was the largest river in the Kanto Plain and originated from mountains to the west. In the early part of the Edo period, to avoid danger from frequent flooding downstream, the main river was diverted to flow in an easterly direction, crossing the plain to the north of Edo and emptying into the Pacific Ocean. Thereafter, the old river was called the Old Tone. Most of the plain consisted of flat lowlands and, therefore, all rivers running through it had a slow current and boats could travel to various places with ease. Both the newly diverted and the old rivers were very extensively used for transporting goods as well as people.
In this print, several sailboats laden with goods are going down the old river, delivering the wares to Edo city, which is located in the direction of the mountains.
On the top of the cliff stand several trees with red leaves, which indicate the season of autumn. Three people stand on the terrace to take in the magnificent views of the Old Tone River at the foot of the terrace, the wide expanse of lowlands extended from the river, Edo castle, the woods of Sensoji Temple and Ueno mountain at the far end of the lowlands and Mt. Fuji in the far distance.

These simple yet stylish deep brown wooden frames blend perfectly into any interior.

Since ukiyo-e have unusual aspect ratios, putting them in off-the-shelf frames often results in an unnatural balance between the margins and the print. Our special ukiyo-e frames allow you to display your prints beautifully as soon as they arrive.

These frames can be used vertically or horizontally by simply repositioning the cord, making it easy to display different prints. And since they use light yet durable acrylic instead of glass, transportation is a stress-free experience.
