Sakurada Moat was known as Benkei Moat at this time. Kojimachi referred to the area from here to Yotsuya. This print depicts the residence of the Ii clan of the Hikone Domain. Ii Naomasa, known for reviving the Ii clan, was a chief vassal of the Tokugawa clan, and fought many battles throughout the country. His descendant Ii Naosuke, chief minister of the shogunate, was assassinated in the Sakuradamon Incident of 1860, just a few years after this print was created.
