One Hundred Famous Views of Edo No.99Kinryuzan (temple) at Asakusa

This print, noted for its beautiful contrast between vermilion and white, is perhaps the best known of the “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.” Kinryuzan is the “mountain name” of Sensoji Temple. Meaning “Golden Dragon Mountain,” the name is said to come from a legend of a golden dragon that descended here from heaven. The lantern, which says “Shinbashi,” was dedicated by believers from Shinbashi. The snow was depicted using a printing technique known as kara-suri.
