Naito Shinjuku was the first station town on the Koshukaido Highway, located around what is now Shinjuku 3-chome. The Naito clan, lords of Shinano Province, provided part of their residence to build this shinjuku, or “new station town,” hence the name. The area was famous for how much dung its packhorses produced.
It is believed that this print was influenced by Itako-bushi, a genre of folk songs that parodied the horses and was popular back then.
