Moon viewing point

One Hundred Famous Views of Edo No.82Moon viewing point

On the east side of the Tokaido Highway at Shinagawa station was a row of restaurants, teahouses, inns and a licensed quarter.
Directly behind these buildings was Edo Bay. On the west side of the highway was a grouping of hills” popularly called Gotenyama, as well as Yatsuyama (meaning “eight hills”), which both commanded a magnificent view of the Bay. One area was called Tsuki no Misaki, or “moon-viewing point”. It was known to Edo people as an excellent place for watching the moon rise above the sea in the east.
Particularly, the full moon of the 15th night of the 8th lunar month in mid-autumn was believed to be the most beautiful of all. People would gather along the coasts, on the hilltops and any vantage point they could find to watch. The moon in question was called chushu no meigetsu, meaning “the brilliant full moon right in the middle of autumn”, but in English it is referred to, more briefly, as a harvest moon.
Hiroshige has chosen to draw the moon viewed from a room in one of the restaurants in front of Tsuki no Misaki. The large full moon has risen well above the horizon, and in the bright moonlight, sailboats can be seen clearly, some with sails lowered and others with sails hoisted. Guests at this restaurant would have enjoyed the moonrise while holding a banquet attended by geisha. There is evidence of two geisha in the room behind the paper doors. Against one door we are able to see the shadow of a girl standing, wearing many ornamental hairpins.

Since ukiyo-e have unusual aspect ratios, putting them in off-the-shelf frames often results in an unnatural balance between the margins and the print. Our special ukiyo-e frames allow you to display your prints beautifully as soon as they arrive.

These frames can be used vertically or horizontally by simply repositioning the cord, making it easy to display different prints. And since they use light yet durable acrylic instead of glass, transportation is a stress-free experience.
