In the early Edo Period, laborers who owned oxcarts were brought from Kyoto to help develop Edo. They were later allowed to settle near Sengakuji Temple, and the area became known as Ushimachi, meaning “Ox Town.” They played a pivotal role in festivals, construction projects and other activities. Here a rainbow arcs across the sky above the Odaiba batteries built to defend Edo against foreign ships, conveying a sense of transition at the Edo Period’s end.
