Shiba Zojoji Temple was one of the two family temples of the Tokugawa shoguns (the other being Ueno Kaneiji Temple). This area was considered to have favorable geomancy, so many temples were built there. The group in the foreground—likely tourists from the provinces—are depicted quite expressively. The temple’s great gate can be seen at the left edge of the print. To the right is Shiba Shinmei Shrine.
