Kyobashi was the first bridge that travelers on the Tokaido Highway crossed after departing from Nihonbashi; the name is a reference to it being the first bridge to Kyoto. Under it flowed the waters of Kyobashi Canal, which was connected to the outer moat of Edo Castle. As suggested by the rows of bamboo seen here, the area hosted a bamboo market. The canal has long since been filled in, and is now the path of an expressway.
