Konya-cho in Kanda is where Edo’s dyers lived and worked. After dyeing the fabric, they would hang it up to dry on rooftop poles as shown here. The white portions of the fabric were printed using a special technique called nunome-suri. Other districts in Kanda included Kaji-cho, the smithing district; Suda-cho, the fruit district; and Norimono-cho, the palanquin district.
