“Miyato River” is the old name of the Sumida River. It was also known as the Asakusa River in the area around Asakusa. The two large groups depicted are pilgrims on their way to Mount Oyama, a sacred mountain in the Tanzawa Range in Sagami Province. The area was a popular destination for excursions in the outskirts of Edo. The closer group is crossing Ryogoku Bridge, although the bridge cannot be seen here.
