Hojoe is a Buddhist ritual in which captive animals are released. This ritual was popular among the people of Edo, who bought animals just for this purpose, believing it would allow them to go to paradise after death. A tortoise suspended from a bucket can be seen in front of a balustrade of the Mannen Bridge. This was likely a play on the bridge’s name, which means “Bridge of Ten Thousand Years,” and the saying “a tortoise can live ten thousand years.”
