This print depicts a tameike (storage pond) that once stretched from Akasaka to Toranomon, seen in the background. Originally a stream than had been dammed, the tameike served in part as an outer moat for Edo Castle. Many paulownia trees were planted along one of its banks to reinforce it. The tameike was also a popular spot for viewing lotus flowers, although they are hard to see here.
