During his conquest of Oshu, samurai lord Minamoto no Yoshiie is said to have thrown his armor into the sea to appease Ryujin, the dragon god of the sea, after encountering a storm. The nearby ferry became known as Yoroi no Watashi, or “Armor Ferry,” as a result. You can see the many white-walled warehouses of nearby Koami-cho, which stored goods from all over Japan.
