This print depicts a view of Edobashi Bridge from Nihonbashi Bridge. The wooden tub containing fresh bonito on the bottom right suggests that this is an early summer scene. The people of Edo loved hatsumono—the first catch or produce of the season. It’s said that some eagerly paid high prices to acquire the first bonito of the season. Only bridges of the highest status had giboshi ornaments atop their balusters.
