This print depicts Ichigaya Hachiman Shrine as seen from the outer moat of Edo Castle. Samurai lord and poet Ota Dokan founded the shrine and “invited” the deity of Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine in Kamakura to be the tutelary deity of Edo Castle. Along with Fukagawa Hachiman, this shrine was one of the eight Hachiman shrines in Edo. The temple environs had many teahouses and playhouses, making it a prime destination for both religion and recreation.
