The place depicted here is likely near the current location of Kototoi Bridge. Looking down the Sumida River, you can see Azuma Bridge and the area around Sensoji Temple off in the distance.
Boating was a form of amusement for the relatively wealthy. Boats with bamboo screens like the one seen here were called yanebune, or “roofed boots.” Merchants used these quite often. Boats enclosed by sliding screens were called yakatabune, meaning “houseboats,” and were owned by samurai.
