One Hundred Famous Views of Edo No.28Gotenyama Hill at Shinagawa

Gotenyama, meaning “Palace Hill,” is where the palatial residence built for Hideyoshi’s concubine and hostage Yodo-gimi once stood. While the buildings burned down in 1702, the cherry trees planted around the residence made the area famous for flower viewing. During the last years of the Edo Period, soil from here was used to build Odaiba, a series of gun batteries meant to defend Edo against the growing threat of foreign ships. This print shows how the soil was cut back along the shore.
