The Kawaguchi Ferry is how travelers along the Iwatsuki Kaido (highway) crossed the Arakawa River. Since the shogun used the highway when traveling to Nikko, it was also known as “Onarimichi.” Zenkoji Temple, shown in the top right, reportedly attracted many worshippers from all over Edo. Like its namesake in Shinano Province (present-day Nagano Prefecture), the temple venerates the Amitabha (“Infinite Light” Buddha).
