There are several theories as to the etymology of the name Sendagi, including senda (one thousand packhorses) and sendan (chinaberry). As to the name Dangozaka (“Dumpling Hill”), theories include a roadside teahouse that sold dumplings, as well as a saying that “You’ll roll down the slope like a dumpling if you rush.” Surgeon, novelist and poet Mori Ogai would later build his home midway up the slope, boosting the area’s recognition.
