This print depicts two ascetics returning from Toranomon Kotohira Shrine on a cold winter morning. This was a common sight in the depths of winter, since it was considered to be the most meritorious season for ascetic practice.
A guardhouse can be seen at the top of Aoi Slope, which was named after the hollyhocks planted along it. The central soba vendor is likely heading home after a long night of peddling noodles.
