This print depicts Senzoku Pond, which still exists in Ota Ward. The Kesagake no Matsu, or “Robe-Hanging Pine,” can be seen on a small cape. Legend has it that the famed Buddhist priest Nichiren hung his robe on the tree while resting here, and had his feet washed in the pond. This is one possible origin of the name Senzoku, which means “Foot Washing.” The curved indigo shading on the pond’s surface showcases the skill of the printer.
