One of several possible origins of the name Samezu—which means “Shark Shore,” is the legend of a Kannon statue found in the belly of a shark. Another theory suggests that it is a corruption of “Samizu.” Shinagawa’s Samezu Coast was a major producer of nori seaweed, which was sold as “Asakusa nori.” Asakusa was famous for its nori but stopped producing early in the Edo Period. Despite this, it continued be sold as Asakusa nori because of the strength of the brand.
