What are reproduction ukiyo-e?
Reproduction ukiyo-e are valuable works of art created by the Tokyo Traditional Woodblock Print Association, employing the same multicolor woodblock printing techniques used during the Edo Period.
The original prints, stored at the Edo-Tokyo Museum, were carefully analyzed to faithfully reproduce their carving and printing.
We hope you enjoy the results of these traditional techniques that photographs cannot fully capture, such as the various printing methods used to express texture, the brilliance of the pigments and mica applied to the paper, and the vigor of the lines on each print.
This site’s primary focus is on Utagawa Hiroshige’s “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.” Serialized between 1856 and 1858, the 119 acknowledged works in this series depict scenic locations in and around Edo.
They are known for their lyrical and innovative portrayals of the changing seasons, the lives of people, the moon, rain, snow, wind and other subjects.
This series of works was extremely popular with the people of Edo and travelers, and also had a great influence on foreign painters such as Monet, Van Gogh and Whistler.
To ensure that you can appreciate the breadth and appeal of this collection, our site divides them into categories based on season, scenery and location, and also provides bilingual (Japanese and English) commentary by ukiyo-e expert Teruaki Hori.
